Culture of creativity features at Furnal Equinox 2018

Sunday, March 25, 2018

Visual art, fabric art, photography, performance, dance, virtual reality, and music were all the subject of sessions at Furnal Equinox 2018, a conference held from March 16 to 18 at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle. Canada’s largest furry convention by attendance, the annual event offers dozens of subculture-specific programs.

The convention’s communications and public relations coordinator for the event, Ronnie, describes furries as “people that enjoy arts and culture centred around animals and animal-themed topics, essentially. Furnal Equinox in particular, we like to celebrate in a very visual and very […] artistic nature, where we have lots of arts and performances and crafts that go on, and people celebrate with lots of socialisation involved.”

Of the attendees, Ronnie told Wikinews “they come from all walks of life. They are people of all ages, sizes, all sorts of backgrounds, and they come together under one mutual interest, which is their love for animal culture.”

“Programming at Furnal Equinox involves[…] a lot of informational panels, so you can find out about topics from art and how to draw, or how to visually incorporate different elements into your artworks. You can also find panels that teach you how to write better, be a better fiction author for example,” explained the event representative.

At one panel Wikinews attended, members of its all-volunteer organising committee spoke of the year-long process of planning the event, and their reasons for committing such a significant amount of their time. Said one panelist, “if you’re happy, we’re happy.”

The largest hub of activity at the convention was a dealer’s room; nicknamed the “Dealer’s Den”, giving it an anthropomorphic twist. Vendors were selling original visual art, wearables like faux fur tails or ears, or things like jewellery or soap with motifs that would interest attendees.

The back area of the room was dedicated to a charity auction, with proceeds benefiting Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. According to the convention website, the charity is “dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandoned farmed animals. Their goal is to provide a safe, life-long home for all of their residents, and to educate the public about the true nature of farmed animals through tours, volunteer programs, and community outreach.”

Split into groups, some attendees played “Fursuit Games” in front of an audience, like trying to toss a ball into a garbage can. The activity made harder, of course, by the limited dexterity and vision the most of the costumes entail.

Are You Sticking With Your Healthy Living Plan?

Are You Sticking With Your Healthy Living Plan?

Gregory L. Gomez

It\’s always a good practice to reflect on the progress you\’re making on any goal you\’re striving for no matter how big or small. If the goal is truly something you want to achieve, then you should want to make sure you are doing everything you possibly can to help ensure your success.

In regards to developing and maintaining a healthy living plan, since this goal encompasses many different topics, it\’s important to reflect often to see what\’s been happening that\’s positive, and also figure out what still needs to be fixed or revamped.

Plain and simple, success losing weight and getting fit will happen for those who are willing to revise their plan and fix what\’s not working.

Effectively tackling the weight loss process takes time and commitment that will most likely make you feel awkward and uncomfortable for a bit.

YouTube Preview Image

For someone who hasn\’t worked out in years, it will be uncomfortable sweating and being out of breath when first getting used to exercising. For the individual who has been eating fast food everyday for the past 5 years, it will be uncomfortable cooking for themselves and reducing the portion size at each meal.

Heck, giving up soda alone may be one of the most difficult things many will have to come to terms with.

This is the main reason why you should constantly be checking to find out what\’s working and what\’s not. You can do this weekly or better yet, daily. The review and revise process doesn\’t take much time or effort on your part. Just mentally go over your nutritional choices for the day along with your exercise plan/schedule.

Since nutrition includes a wide variety of eating instances throughout the day, recall exactly everything you consumed (food and drink alike) from morning to night.

Try not to leave anything out. Yes, that soda and candy bar you bought at break counts. Yep, so do those handfuls of chips you snacked on while cooking dinner. They count too.

After you\’re done analyzing your day, ask yourself if there were any situations or instances that are considered unhealthy moments. If so these are the specific areas you will want to address first in hopes that in the following days you don\’t get hit with the same setbacks all over again.

Once you figure out what is consistently giving you the same trouble, see what can be done to solve the problem. If you are always struggling avoiding that vending machine in the break room at your job, how about instead bring a healthy snack to work along with a bottle of water. Try also not to go into the lunchroom and instead take a nice brisk walk for 0-30 minutes of physical activity. That\’s a great way to keep yourself from overeating at break times, plus you can get a nice amount of heart-pumping exercise while at work.

It\’s moments like these that will determine how successful you\’ll be with your weight loss efforts. The more you are willing to reflect and revise the unhealthy habits, you will be much more likely to reach your health and fitness goal.

Tributes paid to recently deceased US actor Chadwick Boseman

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Over the weekend, tributes were paid to US actor Chadwick Boseman, including Sunday’s commercial-free airing of Black Panther and a special retrospective about Boseman entitled “A Tribute For a King” by American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Boseman died on Friday after being diagnosed with colon cancer four years earlier. Boseman, who rose to international fame for his title role in the 2018 Marvel superhero film Black Panther, was 43 years old.

Boseman died at home on August 28 in the company of his wife and family according to a statement posted to his official Twitter account. It also stated he was in stage IV of his cancer which had been diagnosed in 2016. His illness was not public information, even as he had undergone surgeries and chemotherapy to treat it, all the while continuing to work.

Boseman was born in South Carolina. He attended the British American Drama Academy (BADA) during his studies at Howard University from which he graduated in 2000. Early in his career, Boseman acted in television soap operas, however, his role as Jackie Robinson in film 42 was widely considered a breakthrough. He later played starring roles in other biographical films portraying James Brown in Get On Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Boseman portrayed Black Panther, also known as King T’Challa, in four Marvel films. The first was Captain America: Civil War which preceded the aforementioned Black Panther film. Subsequently, he appeared in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, wrote of Boseman, “I noticed then that Chad was an anomaly”, recalling their first meeting. “He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that [saw] much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time.”

Actor Denzel Washington, who paid for Boseman to attend BADA, stated “He was a gentle soul and a brilliant artist, who will stay with us for eternity through his iconic performances over his short yet illustrious career […] God bless Chadwick Boseman.”

Wayne A. I. Frederick, president of Howard University, wrote “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of alumnus Chadwick Boseman who passed away this evening. His incredible talent will forever be immortalized through his characters and through his own personal journey from student to superhero! Rest in Power, Chadwick!”

On Sunday, the MTV Video Music Awards also marked the passing of Boseman by dedicating the show to him. The audience was also shown a replay from the 2018 ceremony when Boseman gave his “Best Hero” award to James Shaw Jr. who disarmed a shooter at a restaurant in Tennessee.

During ABC’s “A Tribute For a King”, Sunday evening, a number of celebrities made appearances. Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Feige, Bob Iger, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Winston Duke, Mark Ruffalo, and Paul Rudd, all contributed. During the broadcast, Downey said of Boseman, “He was having this immense success, in a strata of his own, humble hardworking, always smile on his face […] Black Panther was hands down the crowning achievement of the Marvel Universe. The one where people got to vote with ticket sales we require this. It is a fantastic movie that leveled the playing field.”

The Walt Disney Company owns both Marvel Studios and ABC.

Thought-controlled cybernetic arms demonstrated

Friday, September 15, 2006

Jesse Sullivan has two cybernetic arms, after electrical burns suffered while working as an electrical utility lineman resulted in amputation of both his arms at the shoulder. Claudia Mitchell has a similar cybernetic left arm, after a motorcycle accident resulted in amputation. Sullivan and Mitchell shook hands with these thought-controlled prosthetic arms at an event staged Thursday in Washington, D.C. by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Center for Artificial Limbs at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Unlike traditional prosthetic limbs, these are actuated through muscle reinnervation; nerves are grafted onto specific muscles, controlling their contraction, which are then detected by electrode sensors and control the prosthetic limb. “Basically it is connecting the dots. Finding the nerves. We have to free the nerves and see how far they reach,” says Dr. Todd Kuiken, developer of the prostheses and director of neuroengineering at the Rehabilitation Institute. By this chain of communication the prostheses utilize thought-controlled biomechanics. According to Sullivan, “When I use the new prosthesis I just do things. I don’t have to think about it … I do all the yard work. I take out the garbage.”

DARPA, as an agency of the United States Department of Defense, seeks to eventually provide such prostheses for soldiers losing their organic limbs in combat. “We’re excited about collaborating with the military,” said Kuiken. 411 U.S. troops in Iraq and 37 in Afghanistan have had wounds that cost them at least one limb according to the Army Medical Command.

Afghan women’s rights official shot dead

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Safia Ahmed-jan, the director of the Afghan Ministry of Women’s Affairs for the Khandahar province and an advocate of women’s rights and a strong critic of the Taliban‘s repression of those rights, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside her home in Khandahar city in southern Afghanistan on Monday.

Safia Ama-jan, as she was known locally, is the first woman official to be targeted by the Taliban-led insurgency since it was deposed in 2001.

Safia Ahmed-jan taught at a girls’ school and was a high-school principal in Khandahar prior to the Taliban’s 1996 rise to power in Afghanistan. When the Taliban regime banned education for girls and forbade women from working outside the home, she ran an underground school for girls at her home, said her son Naqibullah, speaking to the Associated Press.

After the Taliban government was overthrown in 2001, Ahmed-jan became the provincial chief for women’s affairs in 2002, when the ministry was established and has since then held that position, worked for women’s rights and particularly, championed the cause of educating girls. Her secretary, Abdullah Khan told Associated Press that among her most successful projects were the vocational training schools she opened in Khandahar, where almost 1000 women were taught baking, tailoring and other skills.

Ahmed-jan has also been fiercely critical of the repression of women during the Taliban rule, in a region that has remained conservative and emerged as a hotbed of the Taliban’s insurgent activity. Her requests for personal security guards and transport went unheeded by the government, according to local media reports, though her nephew, Muhammad Asif told the New York Times that Ahmed-jan preferred to keep a low profile and used a taxi or public transport even though her office maintained cars and drivers.

Ahmed-jan was shot dead outside her house at about 7:30 a.m. local time (UTC+4:30) on Monday, as she left for work in a taxi. The gunmen are believed to have left scene on a motorcycle, and tyre marks have been found by the police, said the provincial governor Asadullah Khaled, who visited the scene of the attack.

Ahmed-jan was shot four times with a pistol, Muhammad Haidar, who worked in her office told the New York Times. Mohammad Nader, the head nurse at Khandahar’s main hospital where Ahmed-jan was taken to, confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that she was shot four times, including once in the head.

She was about 65 years old.

Accounts of the shooting are sketchy, several reports suggesting no one witnessed it. However, one man, identified as Allaudin told Al Jazeera that he saw two men on motorcycles waiting on the road, who attacked Ahmed-jan as she left her house.

A spokesman for the Khandahar governor, Daud Ahmadi confirmed the death and said that Ahmed-jan had died on the spot. An investigation into the attack has begun, and local officials have blamed the Taliban.

Hundreds of men and women, including the Governor Asadullah Khaled were present at Ahmed-jan’s funeral on Monday evening, which took place in Khandahar’s main Shia mosque.

The killing has been strongly condemned by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai as well as aid and human rights organisations in Afghanistan.

Aleem Siddique, a spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), said that UNAMA was “appalled at the senseless murder” of a woman who was working to ensure a full and equal part in the future of Afghanistan for its women. He added, “We share the sentiment of the majority of Afghan people who are appalled at this killing.”

Abdul Quadar Noorzai, head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) for the Khandahar region told IRIN News that Ahmed-jan’s death will have a “serious impact on women’s activities in the south where women are already suffering from … the deteriorating security and conservative traditions,”.

Fariba Ahmedi, a woman MP from Khandahar who was present at Ahmed-jan’s funeral told the Associated Press, “The enemy of Afghanistan killed her, but they should know it will not derail women from the path we are on. We will continue on our way,”.

Sonja Bachmann, a U.N. political officer who knew Ahmed-jan well told the New York Times that Ahmed-jan “did a good job, she worked in a very low-key way and worked hard to raise awareness about women’s issues.”

Reuters and Associated Press received phone calls, claiming responsibility for the attacks on behalf of Mullah Sadullah, a regional Taliban commander, but no confirmation of the claim has been possible.

Another caller, who identified himself as Taliban commander Mullah Hayat Khan told Al Jazeera that Ahmed-jan was killed because she worked for the government.

The Taliban-led insurgency has stepped up attacks in recent months, killing hundreds of people this year.

Last week, 19 Afghans working for reconstruction projects in the region were killed after their bus was ambushed. The Governor of Paktia province, a close associate of President Karzai, was killed in a suicide bombing on September 10.

Attacks on schools have also been stepped up. According to the Afghan education ministry, there have been 158 attacks on schools this year, compared to 146 last year. The attacks on schools are believed to be due partly to the Taliban’s opposition to educating girls, as well as a way to undermine the Afghan government and it’s reconstruction efforts.

Twelve suspected militants and two Afghan police officers were reported killed on Monday in separate incidents which also left eight others and a U.S. soldier wounded.

“People are scared, of course,” Ahmad-jan’s co-worker Haidar said, “How can we feel secure when the head of our department is killed in front of her house?”

4 Points To Ponder About When Choosing A Ups}

4 Points to Ponder About When Choosing a UPS

Ray.DWhen it comes to choosing the right uninterrupted power supply (UPS), there is a lot of confusion regarding the zeroing in on the right one. How to select the right one? What is the criteria to select the right one? Here we are going to discuss the parameters you may want to consider while selecting a UPS.

1. Requirement:

The first question you need to ask yourself before you select a UPS is: what is the requirement? Or what equipment are you going to connect to so it gets uninterrupted power supply? A UPS system for a home computer or a small system will require a smaller UPS. There is no point in spending too much money and space on a huge UPS when you need to draw only a small amount of power. A larger set up such as a large or medium scale data center or industrial setup will need a larger UPS or many large UPS, because loss of power in such setups can mean a huge loss of revenue in business. There are also Network UPS systems suppliers who supply UPSs targeted towards managing power supply toward networking devices such as LAN and WAN servers and so on. Power UPS systems are for the large scale devices where it is totally unacceptable to have power cuts/ Therefore, before you select an UPS capacity and load, you must select the right UPS for the right purpose.

2. Capacity:

This is the second crucial factor you must consider before you finalise a UPS. There are two ways of representing an UPS: Wattage (W) and Voltage-Amperes (VA). In case of alternating current, they are not the same. The relationship between them is Watts = Volts x Amperes x power factorWhere Power factor is ratio between Real power and apparent power. So that means Watts is the real power and Volt-Ampere is the apparent power. What is important to understand if that the value of Power factor is hardly ever 1.0. Most of them come with a value of 0.8. So a 1000 VA or 1 kVA UPS can deliver only about 800 W of power. With the advancements in technology, today’s UPS’ offer a power factor of 0.9. Going by that, to select the right size of the UPS, select the highest data center load and add some buffer to it. Then pick the next standard-size UPS.

3. Load:

Now that we have calculated the capacity of the UPS and are aware of the logic behind it, we should also consider the amount of load our intended UPS is going to take. It would be colossal waste of energy and money if a high load UPS works on low loads.

4. Future plans:

So, to avoid the discrepancy between the actual load and intended load, it is recommended to use modular UPS. Modular UPS systems are the latest trends in UPS where only a portion of the capacity is used till more is required. As and when there is need for higher supply of power, the extra capacity is activated via software or firmware. And although this service is chargeable, it is good investment because it saves energy and avoids incessant expenditure on UPS. Therefore, modular UPS allow for scalability in growing businesses.

Selecting the right UPS for the right purpose goes a long way towards ensuring optimum performance of the devices operating alongside the UPS – it saves energy, money and protects the device and the UPS from harm.

I have been into industrial equipments for years. So can’t keep myself from sharing the knowledge. More such articles on
