US economy added 290,000 jobs last month, unemployment at 9.9%

Latest figures from the US government say that the country’s economy gained 290,000 jobs in April, the largest single-month gain since March 2006.

According to the Labor Department, excluding temporary workers for this year’s census, the number of non-farm jobs increased by a seasonally adjusted 224,000.

The unemployment rate, meanwhile, increased from 9.7% to 9.9%; the apparent contradiction is because 195,000 people who previously gave up searching for jobs started looking for work again, entering the labor force and augmenting the jobless rate.

The increases were larger than expected by economic analysts; according to a survey done by MarketWatch, economists believed the country would have added 185,000 jobs for last month.

President Obama commented on the numbers earlier today at the White House, saying: “This is the largest monthly increase in four years […] we’ve now seen job growth for four months in a row. These numbers are particularly heartening when you consider where we were a year ago, with an economy in freefall.”

Albert Pujols ends his worst homerun drought

Dominican baseball player Albert Pujols earned his first home run after joining the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Besides hitting his 446th Major League home run, Pujols ended a personal drought by claiming his first regular-season long ball after 33 games and 139 plate appearances, including his last St. Louis Cardinals at-bats. Pujols snapped back at Anaheim and capped a 4-3 home-team win against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

The Dominican first baseman now has a career 1,336 runs batted in and a .326 batting average. Previously, Pujols had played for St. Louis for 11 seasons.

Since playing for the Angels, Pujols has been booed by Anaheim fans after his hits slipped to a .194 average over the past month. Pujols came to his new team with high expectations after signing a contract worth US$240 million.

For his part, Pujols offered the following explanation for his performance: “This game is about making adjustments and being patient…”

George Bush proposes economic growth package worth up to US$150 billion

George W. Bush, the president of the United States has suggested an economic growth package that could be worth almost 1% of the United States’ GDP (the US GDP is appoximately US$15 trillion). The package is expected to come in the form of tax cuts.

In a speech which took place yesterday Mr.Bush said that the economy is an area of “real concern,” to the US government. He added that the US “economy is still creating jobs, though at a reduced pace.”

Democrats want the tax refunds to cover payroll taxes paid by lower-income groups and be combined with more unemployment benefits, food stamps and federal aid to states. It warned against bundling proposals to make Bush’s first term tax cuts permanent with the stimulus package, and the Bush administration has separated the two in this proposal.

When announcing the proposal George Bush said that “as Congress considers such a plan, there are certain principles that must guide its deliberations: This growth package must be big enough to make a difference in an economy as large and dynamic as ours — which means it should be about 1 percent of GDP.” He added that “this growth package must be built on broad-based tax relief that will directly affect economic growth — and not the kind of spending projects that would have little immediate impact on our economy. This growth package must be temporary and take effect right away — so we can get help to our economy when it needs it most.” He also added that he believed the package “must not include any tax increases.”

In the speech George Bush also made it clear that he believes the package should be passed through congress quickly. He said that his belief was that by passing the package through congress quickly would “provide a shot in the arm to keep a fundamentally strong economy healthy. And it will help keep economic sectors that are going through adjustments, such as the housing market, from adversely affecting other parts of our economy.”

Explosions target ethnic Albanians in Croatia

Pula, Croatia – Blasts destroyed two vans owned by ethnic Albanian shop owners at two different locations in Pula, a city in the Croatian region of Istria. There were no injuries in the explosions and there was no responsibility attributed.

Relatives of the shop owners attributed the explosions to the present situation regarding the declaration of independence of Kosovo. There are some 2,000 ethnic Albanians in Istria.

Senior citizen group seeks recovery of Medicare expenses from U.S. cigarette makers

A U.S. lobbyist group, the United Seniors Association, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boston to recover Medicare expenses related to tobacco smoking. The suit says there is a link between nicotine addiction and smoking-related diseases.

The first of its kind lawsuit seeks to recover as much as $60 billion in estimated Medicare expenses outlaid for treatment of lung cancer and emphysema patients.

The Medicare Secondary Payer Statute (MSP) allows someone to sue on behalf of Medicare. The medical expenses that another party was legally obligated to cover, in this case the tobacco companies if they are found liable in court, would be split between parties to the suit and Medicare. The MSP statute was entered in part because the government does not have the resources to prosecute every case under Medicare law.

Charles Jarvis, the CEO of the group said, “Our motivation is one of taxpayer protection.” He added, “Considering how badly the taxpayers have been injured financially, we believe the responsible parties — the tobacco companies — should be reimbursing the taxpayer to the greatest amount possible under the law.”

Currently, U.S. employees are taxed by Medicare at 1.45% of their earnings. This payroll tax amount is matched by their employer when paid to the IRS.

The lawsuit names Philip Morris USA, Lorillard Tobacco, the Liggett Group, and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and two of its subsidiaries as defendants. The United Seniors Association is asking for twice the amount paid by Medicare to treat smoking related illnesses since 1999.

Once upon a time, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) was the love of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), but their romance did not last. Daisy moved on and married the loutish Tom (Joel Edgerton), while Gatsby cried over the fact that he couldn’t compete with Tom’s copious reserves of wealth. He made a few shady deals and became rich enough to move to tony West Egg, a wealthy Long Island suburb. Near his expansive mansion is a small house, which aspiring Wall Street raider Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) rents.

Nick just happens to be a cousin of Daisy, who lives with Tom across the water from Gatsby. She spends her days in utter boredom until she realizes that her lost love, Gatsby, is nearby. She begins attending his opulent, almost legendary parties and seems to lead Gatsby on in order to entertain herself while Tom cheats on her with Myrtle Wilson (Isla Fisher), the homely wife of a gas station attendant. When Myrtle begins to think that Tom is going to take her away from her humdrum life with her husband, George (Jason Clarke), he dismisses her. This underscores his cruelty and shows why Daisy needs the excitement of Gatsby in her life, even if she has no real intention of leaving Tom to be with him.

Nick begins to spend more time with Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby and soon realizes that if he were to strike it rich on Wall Street, this is the life he would have. On the surface, these people seem happy in their wealth and leisure, but once he delves deeper into their lives, he sees the seedier, selfish side of them. “The Great Gatsby” is the ultimate story of the American dream gone sour, in which status and money have largely replaced human decency and goodwill. Will this opulent but dangerous (and in one case, deadly) lifestyle still suck Nick in, or will he be able to walk away from West Egg with his sanity and humanity intact?

It has been said that “The Great Gatsby,” although widely considered to be the best American novel ever written, could not be adapted for the screen or stage. A 1974 film starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow proved that the material could be made into a movie. Though it was a good adaptation, it lacked the panache that Luhrmann brings to his films. The 1974 film also stayed very faithful to the source material, whereas Luhrmann took a few artistic licenses with the book’s plot in order to spice things up. As it turns out, “The Great Gatsby” can be adapted for the screen, it just needs a little help to make it viable. Luhrmann and his cast give the story the jolt it needs to make it exciting and fresh.

As anybody who has watched any of director Baz Luhrmann’s films would expect, “The Great Gatsby” is a visually stunning film. Part of the credit goes to his wife, costumer Catherine Martin, who by now knows Luhrmann’s visual habits like the back of her hand. Each and every piece of clothing the characters wear is painstakingly chosen to go with the set decoration, which is expertly appointed to look like something that would come from the era, but with a slight twist. Add in cinematographer Simon Duggan’s dizzying array of camera shots and angles, and you get some of the best visuals of any movie in recent memory. It’s still too early to tell if any of the fine actors will end up with any awards for their work on “The Great Gatsby,” but the film will no doubt at least get nominated for set decoration and costumes, and most likely the music as well.

The performances from the actors are fantastic across the board, with Maguire nearly stealing the show as Nick, from whose point of view the film is shown. However, there is one extra character that isn’t listed with the rest of the cast that might just be the true star of the film: the music. Luhrmann teamed up with music mogul Jay-Z to come up with a new take on the jazz that permeated the era in which the film is set. The result is an auditory assault of the best kind that gives a modern flavor to a 1920s story without taking it out of that setting. See the film for the visual spectacle, then be sure to buy copy of the soundtrack to relive the experience.

Russia’s Navalny airlifted to Germany

Today, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was airlifted from the city of Omsk in Siberia to Berlin, Germany. Navalny has been suffering from a serious medical condition since Thursday. His associates have alleged Navalny was poisoned.

Alexei Navalny is an outspoken critic of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Navalny was transferred from the hospital in Omsk to Charité in Berlin via air ambulance. Cinema for Peace Foundation, a Berlin-based non-profit, provided for the medical evacuation.

On Thursday, Navalny was flying from Tomsk in Siberia headed for Moscow when he fell ill. The flight was redirected to Omsk, so he could be hospitalized. Associates of Navalny alleged he drank tea laced with poison. Hospital officials in Omsk said no traces of poison was found in his blood or urine. As of Friday, Navalny was in a medically induced coma.

Charité said in a statement, Navalny would be undergoing extensive medical diagnostics. His family would be consulted before any comment on his condition would be released. The hospital also asked for patience.

Apple releases iPhone SDK, announces upcoming update

During a media event held at its Cupertino headquarters, Apple released the long awaited iPhones Software Development Kit (SDK) and the associated iTunes “App Store” and iPhone Developer Program. The SDK will allow third party software developers to create applications for the iPhone and then distribute them on the iTunes Apps Stores. Any members of the iPhone Developer Program can add applications to the store for free; the program costs $99 (USD) to join. Developers will be able to set the price of the applications or release them for free. All applications will have to be approved by Apple before being allowed on the store. Some of the disallowed categories are”porn”, excessive bandwidth users and anything malicious or illegal. VoIP applications would be allowed over Wi-Fi only. Enterprises can setup private pages on the store to distribute internal applications.

At the event several third party developers that had been given early access to the SDK demonstrated their applications. Among the applications demonstrated were EA‘s Spore, AOL‘s AIM instant messenger and a client for epocrates, a drug reference service.

The company also announced the iPhone 2.0 update that was released as a closed beta for developers and is scheduled for public release in June. In the new version Apple has been focusing on enterprise features in an attempt to compete with rivals like RIM‘s BlackBerry and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. The update adds support for ActiveSync, which Apple has licensed from rival Microsoft, WPA2 and virtual private network support. The update will also be available to iPod Touch users for what Steve Jobs described as “a nominal charge”, as Apple have done in the past with the previous iPod Touch and MacBook Wi-Fi updates.
