Niece of Scientology’s leader goes public with criticism

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

The niece of the Church of Scientology‘s top leader David Miscavige has come forward publicly with criticism of the organization and of Scientology practices. Jenna Miscavige Hill, daughter of David Miscavige’s older brother Ron Miscavige, described Scientology policies which broke apart her family and continue to keep members of her family from talking to each other. Hill criticized Scientology practices in a letter to a public relations spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology and in a broadcast of the television program Inside Edition which aired Tuesday, and was interviewed by an investigative journalist for the New York Post.

Hill wrote an open letter addressed to Karin Pouw, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology International, in response to a 15-page statement issued by Pouw on January 14 which was highly critical of Andrew Morton‘s new book on prominent Scientologist Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography. Hill’s letter was posted to the Internet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology on January 25, and has since been widely posted on other Internet message boards.

I am absolutely shocked at how vehemently you insist upon not only denying the truths that have been stated about the church in that biography, but then take it a step further and tell outright lies.

In Pouw’s statement on Morton’s book, she called it a “bigoted defamatory assault replete with lies”. In her letter to Pouw, Hill responded “I am absolutely shocked at how vehemently you insist upon not only denying the truths that have been stated about the church in that biography, but then take it a step further and tell outright lies.” Specifically, Hill rebuked the Church of Scientology’s denial of a practice called “disconnection“, where members are instructed to sever all ties with friends and family who are critical of Scientology and deemed a “Suppressive Person“, or SP.

Hill wrote that it was this particular policy which broke up her family when she was 16, going on to detail how the Church of Scientology restricted her communications with her parents: “Not only was I not allowed to speak to them, I was not allowed to answer a phone for well over a year, in case it was them calling me.”

The church does not respond to newsgroup postings.

When contacted for a comment on Hill’s letter, Karin Pouw told the Agence France-Presse: “The church stands by its statement of 14 January. The church does not respond to newsgroup postings.” Hill explained her motivation for writing the letter to the Agence France-Presse: “My intention is to put it on a public forum so they are pressured into changing their ways — even if it is just to cover for themselves.”

In a broadcast of the television program Inside Edition which aired Tuesday, Hill spoke with reporter Les Trent about Scientology’s disconnection policy. Hill described a pregnant friend whose parents are still members of the Church of Scientology; but will not speak with her: “She lives in L.A. – her parents live right around the hill from her, you know she tried to call them when she was having her first child, and they were like: ‘No, sorry, I can’t speak to you.'” The Church of Scientology told Inside Edition that the allegation made by Hill is “the opposite of what the church believes and practices.” Hill last spoke to her uncle David Miscavige four years ago, around the same time that she viewed a promotional video featuring Tom Cruise, at an awards ceremony. This video was recently leaked to the Internet and appeared on the video sharing site YouTube. YouTube took the video down due to a legal complaint from the Church of Scientology, but though the website Gawker.com received a similar legal complaint, Gawker has stated that the video is newsworthy and will not be removed.

Just as L. Ron Hubbard’s family was rocked with turmoil, so it seems is Miscavige’s.

Prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology David S. Touretzky commented on these recent developments, in an interview Wednesday with Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull: “She has nothing to do with Chanology [the recent anti-Scientology movement that has gathered on Internet message boards], but what we’re seeing here is a “perfect storm” of entheta [material considered negative by Scientology]. It’s all coming together in a chain reaction: The Tom Cruise video, Andrew Morton’s bio, Kirstie Alley’s craziness, Kimora Lee Simmons, Jenna Miscavige, and there’s more to come!” Another critic of Scientology, Mark Bunker of the website XenuTV.com, compared the recent revelations to troubles in Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard‘s family: “Just as L. Ron Hubbard’s family was rocked with turmoil, so it seems is Miscavige’s.” Bunker commented on the Inside Edition piece: “This is a jaw-dropping TV segment — although Inside Edition clearly didn’t understand just how important a story they had.”

In an interview published Wednesday in the New York Post, Hill stated that she has been harassed by the Church of Scientology for speaking out against the organization: “The church has contacted several of my friends, telling them that I am smearing the church and I am going to be declared a suppressive person and asking my friends if they would disconnect from me and, in at least one case, insisting that they do.” The New York Post attempted to contact Karin Pouw for a comment, but she did not respond in time for their publication.

Salvador Sobral wins Eurovision for Portugal

Monday, May 15, 2017

On Saturday, Portugal won its first victory at the Eurovision song competition, held this year at Kiev’s International Exhibition Centre in Ukraine. Salvador Sobral’s song Amar Pelos Dois won 758 points from public and professional judges. Bulgaria and Moldova came second and third respectively. Sobral called it “a victory for music”.

Out of 42 countries participating this time, 26 countries including hosts Ukraine and the Big Five — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — competed in the finals. The competition began on May 9. Sobral, who has a serious heart problem, did not perform during early rehearsals. Ukraine, Germany and Spain ended up at the bottom of the vote ranking winning collecting respectively 36, six and five points.

UK representative Lucie Jones secured fifteenth place with 111 points. Sobral’s ballad was written by his sister, who joined the 27-year-old winner on the stage during the reprise. Winner of the second semi-final Bulgaria’s Kristian Kostov secured 615 points from the voting and Moldova won 374 points. Last year, Ukrainian singer Jamala scored 534 points, then highest in the competition, but this year won only 36 points.

Portugal made its first appearance in the competition in 1964. The European Broadcast Union (EBU) warned Sobral against breaking the rules of the contest after he wore a t-shirt with “S.O.S.Refugees” written on it in a press conference following the first semi-final which Portugal had won. The Portuguese said, “If I’m here and I have European exposure, the least thing I can do is a humanitarian message […] People come to Europe in plastic boats and are being asked to show their birth certificates in order to enter a country. These people are not immigrants, they’re refugees running from death. Make no mistake. There is so much bureaucratic stuff happening in the refugee camps in Greece, Turkey, and Italy and we should help create legal and safe pathways from these countries to their destiny countries” EBU banned him from wearing t-shirts with politically motivated messages.

Kasia Mo?, representing Poland, said that she dedicated her performance to animal rights and added “I just hope that after this in Poland we’re going to change the law and we will not have dogs on chains”.

Eurovision reported the final was watched by four million viewers on YouTube.

As the winner of this edition of the competition, Portugal is to host next year’s competition. Two-time winner of the competition Ukraine previously hosted the 2005 contest.

Benefits Of Bariatric Surgery

Benefits of Bariatric Surgery

by

Dr. Kevin Huguet, MD

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our society, and it is also becoming a global concern. Numerous news features, medical reports and studies have recently increased our awareness of the widespread phenomenon of obesity, and the health problems that are associated with it. Obesity-related health issues are abundant, ranging from diabetes to high blood pressure to heart disease, not to mention the psychological aspect of emotional difficulties that can result from a negative self-perception. Overall, the plethora of negative effects on the human body and the mind as a result of obesity are overwhelming and can be devastating. According to the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), an individual is considered severely or morbidly obese at 50-100 percent above his or her ideal body weight. That also includes those who are over 100 pounds of his or her ideal body weight.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 9 million Americans are considered to be morbidly obese. There are many factors in the cause of obesity. Genetics or hereditary causes; caloric intake that far exceeds the physical activity necessary to burn off excess; environmental causes (quality and quantity of food available in conjunction with a sedentary lifestyle); and physical and mental illnesses are some of the main culprits. Most of the time when an individual considered morbidly obese seeks help, the physician initially recommended that he or she try conventional weight loss methods. Usually various combinations of diets and increased physical activity eventually leading to consistent exercise are given a try. Diet drinks or diet pills are also tried by many, often times with negligible results. When it comes to the use of conventional weight loss methods for those considered to be morbidly obese, the failure rate is pretty high, and these folks need help beyond what they might be able to accomplish on their own. At this point, bariatric weight loss surgery and consultation with bariatric surgeons may be considered as an option. The Bariatric Surgery Solution Bariatric or weight loss surgery has proven to be a very viable and effective solution for obese individuals who choose this option. In fact, the NIH now recommends bariatric surgery for the morbidly obese, and for those whose obesity has led to diabetes or other medical conditions.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC2KDPIO4jo[/youtube]

The three most commonly-used types of weight loss surgeries are: 1. Gastric Bypass Surgery, where the smaller, upper part of the stomach is stapled, thus separating it from the rest of the stomach. The small intestine is rerouted and connected to the smaller stomach pouch resulting in a reduction of the amount of food that an individual can consume. 2. Lap-Band Surgery, where a silicon rubber band is placed around the top of an individual s stomach, thus creating a smaller stomach pouch. The result of this surgery is a slower flow of food through the stomach, and the feeling of being full very quickly. 3. Gastric Sleeve Surgery, where a relatively large portion of the stomach is removed and the open edges are reattached, thus permanently reducing the size of the stomach. The benefits of bariatric surgery not only result in weight loss, but also in improvement with various health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease, respiratory deficiencies, and more. Bariatric doctors are continually improving techniques, and have made great advancements in the field of bariatric weight loss surgery. Great strides have also been taken in decreasing the possibility of complications after bariatric surgery. As mentioned, weight reduction surgery also helps to improve the psychological outlook of many formerly obese individuals. It boosts their confidence and improves their overall quality of life.

Ariel Sharon’s brain shows activity

Saturday, January 14, 2006

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after 10 days.

Medical experts on the outside say that Sharon’s failure to regain consciousness does not look well for his recovery.

On Wednesday, doctors began reducing the level of sedatives with the intent of drawing Sharon out of an induced coma. Hospital officials say that Sharon remains “lightly sedated”, but are not sure when he will wake up once they stop giving him the sedatives.

New reports say an EEG has shown that Sharon has activity on both sides of his brain and doctors say that’s the most “promising” signs they have had since they started to bring him out of the coma. Doctors also say that activity in both lobes doesn’t indicate anything about the extent of the brain damage. “It is another piece of information that on its own means nothing,” said Dr. Gal Ifergan, a neurologist at Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, who is not treating Sharon.

Although he has activity on both sides of his brain, Sharon could still have extensive brain damage, Ifergan said. He also said that it’s “very worrisome that he hasn’t woken from his coma”, yet.

There are 2 major types of stroke, and Sharon has had both. The first was a mild stroke Dec. 18 caused by a blood clot that lodged in an artery in the brain, cutting off blood flow and causing minor damage. The second occurred just one day before he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a hole in his heart. This one was a severe cerebral hemorrhage

“After nine days he has had very slow progress and that indicates more permanent injury to a level where his quality of life is affected,” Dr. Demetrius Lopes, a Rush University Medical Center neurosurgeon said. “And then decisions will have to be made,” he added.

Sharon’s condition is still critical but stable.

Air Pacific re-brands as Fiji Airways

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Fiji’s national airline Air Pacific has now officially returned to its original name: Fiji Airways. Fiji Airways adopted the Air Pacific name in 1971, slightly prior to its first international flight on June 3, 1973. The re-brand was described by interim CEO Aubrey Swift as allowing the airline to align itself “closer with Fiji as a destination”. The name change is designed in part to reduce the confusion which surrounded the name Air Pacific. Swift noted that “Air Pacific just didn’t resonate with our customers” and said that same people “thought we were an air conditioning company”.

Along with the name change, the airline has redesigned its website, and changed the name of each of its classes of service. Pacific Voyager and Tabua Class have been replaced with economy and business class respectively. The airline has also introduced plans to overhaul its fleet of older Boeing 747s with Airbus A330s. It has said that the completion of this overhaul and the re-branding efforts will be completed by the end of the year.

The airline’s new brand-mark and livery features a masi design created by Fijian artist, Makereta Matemosi. The new identity is to “symbolises the airline’s new identity and epitomises all that Fiji Airways represents. It is authentic, distinctive, and true to the airline’s Fijian roots”, the airline said.

Guinean military leader in ‘favourable’ condition after attempted assassination

Monday, December 7, 2009

Morocco said earlier today that Guinea’s military ruler, Moussa Dadis Camara, has undergone successful surgery for gunshot wounds sustained on Thursday in an apparent assassination attempt. Guinea’s military government is offering a reward for the capture of the former head of the presidential guard whose men are accused of carrying out the attack.

The inspector of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces’ health services said that Camara has had successful surgery for head trauma. In a statement issued by Morocco’s official press agency, Dr. Ali Abrouq said Camara’s condition is “not worrying.”

“The current health condition of the Guinean president does not inspire concern,” Abrouq noted in a statement. “The result of the operation is favorable.”

Camara flew to Morocco on Friday after being shot the day before by men loyal to his former aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite, who is also known as Toumba. Toumba escaped the attack, and is still at large with a group of the presidential guard.

Harouna Kone, a spokesman for the junta, commented that Camara should be able to return to Guinea by Wednesday. “The president is doing very well and we expecting that he will come back maybe on Wednesday […] he is in the Royal Hospital of Rabat, and I think that everything is well there. He called last night and [spoke] with his minister of communication and they discussed about something,” he said, as quoted by the Voice of America news agency.

Security forces, meanwhile, are patrolling Guinea’s borders in search of Toumba, and the government is offering a reward for information leading to his capture.

Guinea’s vice-president and defense minister, General Sekouba Konate, became the interim leader following the attempted assassination.

Thursday’s shooting followed an argument between Toumba and Camara about who should take responsibility for the killing of opposition demonstrators two months ago. Witnesses say Toumba gave the order for the presidential guard to open fire on people protesting Camara’s expected presidential candidacy.

Local human rights groups said that at least 157 people were killed on September 28; the military put the number at 57 people.

What Are The Common Causes Of Mouth Pain?

byadmin

Mouth Pain can have many causes, so it is important individuals seek their dentist so they will know what is causing the pain and what treatment will be most beneficial. A full mouth examination and a discussion of the symptoms being experienced will allow a patient to receive the treatment they need for full relief. With this information, individuals will learn about some of the common causes of pain in the mouth so they can know when they need to seek their dentist for treatment.

* Cavities are one of the most common causes of Mouth Pain. Cavities cause pain because they eat away at the protective enamel and cause openings to develop that result in nerve exposure. If a person’s teeth are causing them pain, they need to promptly see their dentist for treatment so continued damage does not occur or spread to other teeth.

* Gum infections can often cause pain to occur in the mouth. When gum infections become severe, the gums become inflamed, causing massive swelling and irritation. If redness, swelling, and pus drainage are present, a person needs to see their dentist for care so their condition can be properly treated. Treatment involves deep cleaning procedures and antibiotic treatments.

* Mouth sores can often become extremely painful, especially when a person eats or drinks. Sores can be caused by irritating foods, viruses, and systemic disorders. While occasional mouth sores are nothing to be concerned about, consistent outbreaks may be caused by a health condition that needs to be treated.

* Yeast infections in the mouth are called thrush, and these can cause the tongue, cheeks, and lips to be sore. These infections need to be treated properly or they will continue to worsen and make eating and drinking very painful.

If a painful mouth is making it difficult for you to eat, drink, or even speak, it is imperative to see your dentist to determine the causes.
