The original Sonic The Hedgehog game made Sega into what it is today. That fact alone should say something about how popular and successful the game and the sequels have become. It is similar to what the Zelda series did for Nintendo. This game again proves that you do not need to have complex gameplay and intra game interactions to have a successful game. What you need is something simple, fun and addictive. When you think about it, most of today’s complex games lack replay value. Once a gamer has finished the game, once the story has been told and everything has been solved, there are very few games that will appeal to the gamer for a replay.

Yet, Sonic is so popular that fans have ported the games in to online flash version that are almost like the original versions. The very first Sonic game, the game that started it all, is still around and it is played by thousands, if not millions, of gamers in its various versions (legacy console emulators, flash version, etc.). Keeping mind that the graphics, animation and the sound are all from the original 16bit console, it is obvious that those are not the areas where the games appeals to gamers. It is absolutely no match for modern games and it is like comparing a cherry to a watermelon.

The attraction actually lies in the simple but challenging gameplay. The innovative in game elements and level designs, coupled with the time bound playing is what makes it so very challenging. It is one of those games, which are easy to learn but very difficult to master. But the game play is so very fun and addictive, that anyone who plays becomes addicted to it. Originally, the innovative features are the points where it really caught on. While trying to compete with the Mario game, the Sonic game saw a lot of new elements being introduced in to the platformer genre. The first and foremost feature would be the rings that Sonic has to collect throughout the game.

While it is similar to the coins in Mario and a certain number does give an additional life, the rings do more than just that. These rings, in addition to the signature speed of Sonic, the high-speed devices, the springboard mechanisms, etc are what really separated Sonic The Hedgehog from other games. These elements were never seen before the inception of the first Sonic game. Also, at that time, developers took full advantage of the new 16-bit console and its superior Yamaha sound chip. They made the game much more colorful and gave a great deal of attention to creating original sound effects for Sonic.

These elements are no longer important, but the original game design still holds court and the huge, international Sonic fan base is testimony to that. The subsequent Sonic games have met with equal amounts of enthusiasm and they continue to entertain generation after generation of gamers all over the world, starting from Japan and travelling all the way to the US.

An Insight Into Copywriting

Copywriting, whether it is for a blog post, email, article or anything else is a skill that can be learnt through practise and tuition, usually a mixture of both.

If you already consider yourself as a reasonably good writer, i.e. you can write either stories, good letters or perhaps you have even had a go at press reviews then the additional skills required to write good copy shouldn\’t be too difficult to master.

The main ingredient of good copywriting for marketing purposes, is to write in such a way that the words you have written convince the reader to buy the product you are writing about.

To perfect this skill, and it is a skill, takes time. As with most tasks in life, the more you do something the more proficient you become at it. Very few people would be able to sit down with a piece of paper and a pen, sorry, a laptop or PC, and write good copy that will sell something at the first attempt. Copywriting is a lifelong learning skill, you will never know all there is to know, but the more you do the better you become. I personally try to write something every day, either an article, a review or a blog post.

I know when I first started writing copy, and I considered myself to be a reasonable writer, I sat for endless hours staring at a blank computer screen, suddenly I just didn\’t have a clue what to write. It must have taken me six months of reading books, buying various courses and reading endless articles written by others, before I could put a, something like decent, article together. Five years on I still don\’t consider myself to be very good at it, although my efforts of today are far superior to what they were then.

A first class book, well worth paying a few dollars for is The Copywriter\’s Handbook, A Step-By-Step Guide To Copywriting That Sells, written by Robert W Bly. I have learnt a lot from this book and would definitely recommend it. Please note, I\’m not getting any sort of commission for recommending it! I just think it\’s a good book that might be of value to the copywriting beginner. The book is a good introduction to the various types of copywriting you may be required to do, be it advertising for different products, direct mail or web content.

There are many copywriting tutorials available by searching Google, some free, some you have to pay for, some good and some not so good and some absolute rubbish.

As copywriting is, in my humble opinion, probably the most important skill you are going to need , I think it\’s well worth while spending some time to learn that skill.

I don\’t think that a website full of the latest flashy graphics and lots of pretty animations will ever outdo a well written piece of copy, I\’m not saying that pages of well written copy will sell your product, they probably won\’t, but a sensible mixture of both good graphics and well written copy probably will. Sometimes, it\’s just a few simple words written in a particular way that will make you an awful lot of money.

I hope this short piece on copywriting has helped you. Remember, Rome wasn\’t built in a day, I am the first to admit that I still try to learn something new about internet marketing every day, whether it\’s writing skills, marketing or just new computer skills.
