He can analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals and other data to assess its feasibility, cost and maintenance requirements. He must ensure conformance of system components and direct modifications of products with the engineering designs and standards. He is also responsible for the estimation of costs and submission of bids for engineering, construction or extraction of projects and preparation of contract documents.

To be able to deliver the tasks mentioned above, a Mechanical Design Engineer must have extensive knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques to maximize effective manufacture and distribution of goods. He must be familiar with the business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques as well as production methods and coordination. He has to identify complex problems and review related information to develop options and implement solutions. He can apply logic and reasoning as well as mathematical and scientific rules and methods to solve problems. He must possess a competent knowledge in the structure and content of the English language which includes word spelling, rules of composition and grammar. This will be very useful in communicating through writing and preparation of reports. It would also be advantageous for Mechanical Design Engineer to have knowledge in circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.

As technology continues to evolve and computer programs are constantly upgraded, it is important for a Mechanical Design Engineer to undergo training to update his knowledge and skills in computer programs.
